September 2011

Finals Day has come around again as we move towards the end of the summer It seems to get quicker every year. This year the majority of finals will be played on Saturday 10th Sepetmber.

There will be a barbeque available at lunch time, and wine, beer and soft drinks all availabe for a small fee.

Come along as a member to support the players, or as a guest to meet us and see if you'd like to be part of our friendly village club.

See you on the day.

May 2011

The AGM was conducted on 1st April and was enjoyed by all, so many thanks to those who came. The main changes are that Sylvia has stepped down as Secretary and this position has been taken on by Nick. No-one was prepared to take on my role as Chairman, so it was agreed that in future this would be a rolling position for each Committee Member undertaking this for 2 years. So now we need a volunteer for 2012/13!

Your new Committee now consists of:-
Chairman - Paul Sutherland
Treasurer - Ginny Davies
Social Secretary - Margaret Haywood
Coaching and Youth - Julia Kirkland
Website and Secretary - Nick Kirkland
Membership Secretary - Tony Shea
Coach - Justin Cook

We intend to have a couple of work party days at some stage in the near future. One will be to give the Clubhouse and spring clean, and the other will be to lay a few more paving slabs and assemble a new shed. Perhaps these could be accompanied by a Bar B Q? Please let me have your thoughts. I have been in touch with our Landlord and they have agreed to cut he hedge back in a height of about 1.5 metres in the late summer/early autumn when the nesting birds have flown.
The gate key numbers will change on 1st June 2011 so please consult your member's web page for details.

April 2011

AGM: The AGM was held on 1st April, 2011.

I have agreed to stay on as Chairman for a further year as no one else stepped forward. Please do talk to me or any other member of the committee if you would like to get involved running the club.

To start the new season we're holding an open day for anyone under 18 - no matter how young as long as they can hold a racquet - on Saturday 30th April full details here.

The good weather appears to be with us for a while so enjoy your Tennis.

November 2010: Winter draws on...

Well, the winter is upon us but we are still playing when the weather allows.

As those of you who have been to the Club recently will have noticed, the Bowls Club, with our approval, have reduced the height of the bordering hedge. This will allow more light and airflow onto our courts and should restrict the growth of algae and moss on the surface. Should we request the Council to do the same with the hedge between us and the Recreation Ground? To quickly summarize the pros and cons; we need to balance the additional air flow for drying and better light against the loss of privacy (if indeed we want this) and any wind affecting play. Please let me have your opinion.

Regarding the Christmas Lunch, we have to revert to the Spade Oak. Please let Margaret know of your proposed attendance. The date remains at 12th December at 1230 and the 3 courses are priced at £19.95pp.

As you know, I have been your Chairman since 2005 and on the Committee for some time before that, I will be stepping down from the Chair at next year's AGM. Sylvia, who has been our non-member Secretary will also discontinue her role. We therefore need new blood to fill these vacancies to continue the smooth operation of the Club. I shall be happy to continue with organising the maintenance, at least until the ongoing projects are completed.

A proposal has been made to change the orientation of the 2 courts from facing/back-to the Bowls Club to facing/back-to our modest clubhouse. The advantage of this would be that the, now northerly, court would receive more morning winter sun and therefore be playable sooner after rain or a frost. The only cost additional to re-surfacing would be to re-site the net posts. Again, please let me have your thoughts on this subject.

May 2010 The Season Starts Here

Welcome to another year of Tennis with FHLTC.

This is the second year we have the website for member and guest communications and I invite you all to come back here often to check all of the news about the club - whether it be competitions, results or social activities.

We'd be delighted to welcome new members, so do get in touch no matter how good a player (or otherwise) you are.

March / April 2010: 2010 AGM

The AGM will be held at 3 Greenlands, Flackwell Heath on 24th April at 7pm. A light supper will be provided but please bring your own drinks. For the full agenda see the news pages

I hope to see as many of you as possible on the evening.

January 2010:

Unfortunately in the cold snap we had a burst pipe in the club house, so there are no facilities (neither toilets nor tea making) available at the courts in the near future.

October 2009: Autumn Season

Now that the clocks have gone back, the Wednesday session is between 2pm and 4pm. Please try to support this as sometimes it has been poorly attended even when the weather has been excellent. The Thursday and Sunday morning sessions continue as usual even though John Bryant's presence is missed. I've spoken to him and he continues to progress after what has been a trying experience for him. Fortunately his high level of fitness has hugely assisted in his recovery and he hopes to make the Christmas lunch and we all look forward to seeing him there. I'd like to thank Simon and Matt for their help with the Saturday Training sessions, and Simon again for the Finals Day competition, also Julia for her sterling work on the day, not to mention her patience and endurance. We'll be giving some thought to this for next year as it did go on for too long and one of the considerations is to change to a format of best of three sets, each set winner being the 1st to, say, 21 points. This number may need some adjustment, so your comments please. I should also like comments regarding the removal, or severe cutting back of the hedge betwen the courts and the playing field. In it's favour would be that the increased air circulation would help the courts to dry after rain, and visibility of the courts would help reduce vandalism and help make people aware that we exist, we'd not loose so many balls either. Against is loss of privacy and increased wind disturbance. Please set up a userid on the new discussion board, and let us all know what you are thinking

July 2009: Summer Season

Wimbledon is over for another year, with virtually no rain and a thrilling men's singles final which left many of us feeling sorry for Andy Roddick. But the £400k+ he received will, no doubt, soothe his disappointment.

The hot weather has unfortunately brought another spate of vandalism at the courts, so may I request all court users to ensure that the gates are locked after use, and not to pass the lock code onto anyone. We will probably have to change it again soon. One of the net posts is away for repair, but should be back shortly. Thanks to John Bryant for arranging this.

Whilst we are unlikely to match the thrills of Wimbledon, and certainly not the prize money, our own competitions start soon. Do please enter, it is fun, you're amongst friends and we have a good finals day to look forward to with a barbeque and bar.

Enjoy your sport.

March 2009: Welcome to the new FHLTC Website.

There is lots of information here, but if you would like something additional, please email the relevant committee member. Although the courts are available to hire to non members by booking with the video shop in the village, I would like to welcome you as a member - the benefits of membership are listed here. We run internal competitions, which cater for all standards of play, so come along for a taster session where you will be made most welcome. Wear the appropriate clothing - we can lend you a racket if you don't have one. So why not pop along and have a cup of tea and a knock around.
